Simply the best..... "Say Wah g"

The most fantastic thing about blogging is that we can search for anecdotes and quotes as and when we type on a particular topic or person. Starting to write about Sehwag I searched for quotes on simplicity, and after reading through the quotes from great personalities, I came to only one conclusion. Keeping things simple is the most difficult of all. Just take a look at this quote,

“In character, in manner, in style, in all things, the supreme excellence is simplicity.”

Supreme excellence takes years of practice, which equates that to make things look simple, it is very difficult.

But where does Sehwag come into the picture here? That is because Sehwag is simple.

“As you simplify your life, the laws of the universe will be simpler; solitude will not be solitude, poverty will not be poverty, nor weakness weakness.”

Sehwag has a weakness against the ball coming in, gets frustrated being tied up at the non striker's end, goes after deliveries outside off stump regardless of the situation, doesnt play the hook shot properly, has problems against the raising ball and fends it often( his solution to turn this of his hips isnt proper either because he plays it in the air more often than not) does not move his feet, and biggest of them all, Sehwag has a very careless attitude when he bats....

So how does Sehwag succeed? Over a period of time, everyone evolves into a different person than the one he originally was, through experience knowledge etc. People define that as maturity. Surely you are not the person that you once were? This applies to batting too...(remember Afridi in the T20 final?) On one end you have Sachin grafting for runs and on the other you have Dravid counter attacking with disdain at 32/4, while ten years back it would have been( and was) vice versa.

So how has Sehwag's batting evolved?

Experience?

Batting at Melbourne on 195 he tried to clear long on of a non regular bowler and got out....India subsequently lost the match, and people claimed that had this rash stroke hadnt happened, India would have won their first series in the Oz...

Thats a lot of experience/burden on your shoulders...

Two tests later, he goes to both 100 and 300 by hitting sixes of regular bowlers so much so that the six for 300 was the same stroke he mishit in Melbourne!!!!

Knowledge?

Teams dissect your weakness with alarming quickness. Dravid was so successful in the 2003 series against Australia with the flick through mid wicket that Aus kept two close in fielders at short mid wicket to prevent him from playing the shot. He didnt play the shot and his form and batting fell through in the subsequent series against them because of that.

Similarly Sehwag was successfully cutting through third man and deep cover in Aus that a permanent third man and deep cover was kept as early as the first over of a test match!!!.... that too for Glenn Mcgrath...

Result? Mcgrath was hit for 16 runs in his first over in the same area between the two fielders!!!!

People start to put Sehwag into the "arrogant" category. Surely, I would ask these people to hear him speak on something and then classify him. He is a simple man, who says simple things...."I see the ball, I hit the ball". Surely, it takes years for everyone else to talk zen like this!!!!! You dont call zen masters arrogant!!!

So, who was the most disappointed person when Sehwag got out at 293? May be the guy who illegally bet on him in Cayman Islands, but not Sehwag who just shrugged and said "I was happy I got 293"...

When someone says Sehwag is a master when the pitch is flat, people tend to disagree...But they are true, Sehwag is a master at getting results in flat pitches... There is nobody in the game who can take advantage of a flat pitch than Sehwag....

What are the chances Sehwag will displace Sachin, Dravid or even Sunny from their pedestal as the best batsman? Very slim....but we can say this quite confidently, while Sunny had competition from Sachin, and Sachin from Dravid, rest assured there wont be another to challenge Sehwag!!!!!

  1. Very rightly said...and I would like to add that ..for the people who say he is a flat wicket bully, he has scored 2 100s in Nz when batsmen from either side were trying hard to cross 25...
Team totals were less than 200 in all 7 ODIs...

Also the 201* at Galle test was one of the tuffest of pitches to bat on..where he produced result !!

and in the modern era, he is the only player who scored 300 and made his team win (leavning behind 300s against Ban or Zim)

  2. Thats a great article on Sehwag Ram.. Every thing is perfect about him and i totally agree that there wont be any challenge to Sehwag..

But when it comes to Indian test cricket i dont understand why people start rating players every time and always Dravid falls behind Sachin or Sunny... It should certainly be Dravid on top.. Even if we go by stats i am sure Dravid holds a great Test record outside India than Sachin or Sunny..His avg outside India in tests is 56.90, where as Sachin is below him.. Also if you take a note of their knocks, Dravid's knocks have always come under extreme pressure and match winning and Sachin has never done that in tests. Its better we say, Sachin follows Dravid as the best Indian test batsman ever and Sehwag is on a separate league...

  3. I would never make a derogatory comment against Dravid, that would be blasphemy. What I was saying was there was a period when Sunny was the best Indian batsman, and then Sachin replaced him as the best for a period...And then Dravid replaced Sachin as the best..... But now, there are lots of batsmen based on form and class who are vying for the best batsman post! But Sehwag is in a platform where nobody past or present can come...thats what I am saying.... And for all Dravid's record and playing, Sachin is a better batsman...will give you one piece of statistic-since u started it...Dravid's avg against Aus with Mcgrath, Warne and Gillespie is around 25 and thats also boosted by the 180 he scored against them...Sachin has 3 centuries and 3 50s....Another problem with Sachin not being a match winner is this.... Sachin has scored centuries when no other batsman has passed 20. When Dravid scores, rest assured somebody else would score too...Infact the only two centuries that I can remember Dravid scoring alone, is the 148 in Jo burg and 190 against NZ...

"Sachin has never done that in tests" - Which world do you live in mate?

His Average outside India maybe better than Sunny or Sachin but its not like Sachin and Sunny have a bad record abroad. Going by that logic is Kallis greater than Sachin or Dravid?

To fully appreciate Dravid (I must admit that I am as great a fan of Dravid as anyone in the world), we dont have to bring down Sachin. And its even better that we stay away from Sunny - his contribution to Indian Cricket is insanely huge. So even if he ends his career with an average above 60, he'll always be behind Sachin and Sunny and that is no less a achievement.

Recently there was an article on Dravid by Suresh Menon in Tehelka which I think is arguably the best piece of writing on Dravid till date.

    @Ramki
Thanks for saving my effort....We should write a separate blog on this topic...After almost every Dravid hundred this seems to be in fashion in the media too...

  5. I certainly dont agree with the stats that you have come up against Dravid and Sachin, please dont tell that. Do you mean to say that in all 43 hundreds of Sachin no other batsman has crossed 20 or has scored much, thats blind stats.. Its just that people cant digest the fact that Sachin has never been a match winner in tests and Dravid has won us a few matches abroad.. If you had said the same stats with Lara, i would certainly agree to it, since he never had a proper support from his team almost all through his carrer and Lara was a lone warrior in his team.. Sachin never had that problem.. Its just the mind set of people in India that they cant agree to facts against Sachin and to prove it wrong they come up sats of Sachin against individual players.. thats of no use to us when it comes to team winning...

  6. @ Mahesh

The only point i was about to stress in my comment is just opposite of what you have quoted

"To fully appreciate Dravid (I must admit that I am as great a fan of Dravid as anyone in the world), we dont have to bring down Sachin."

I just say, to appreciate Sachin, they just kepp Dravid a step behind him which is not the case actually. Also this does not mean that i belong to Dravid's fan group and i am against Sachin, in fact i dont belong to either fan group and its Lara all the way for me..

    ReplyDelete
  7. Wow... this is interesting. Let's come to the Sachin vs Dravid point a little later.

"Lara was a lone warrior in his team.. Sachin never had that problem.. "

"its just that people cant digest the fact that Sachin has never been a match winner in tests"

    Oppsy...now define what's a match winning innings?

And Lara being a lone warrior...Lets get it straight, a match is won by bowlers and set up by batsmen. In the 90's Sachin did all that is humanly possible to set it up for the team and we just didn't have the bowlers to take 20 wickets abroad and contrat that with home record - coz Kumble alone was capable of dismissing the opponents at home. And in this decade the match winning innings of all Indian batsmen have improved leave alone Sachin thanks to a better bowling attack.

Lara has represented his team in the most number of lost matches than any player in history. This despite having a bloody good fast bowling attack in Ambrose, Walsh and Bishop in the first half of his career (Walsh and Ambrose even later). On his day he is surely the greatest match winner - his single handed effort in drawing the test series against Australia at home is beyond the reach of anyone who's wielded a willow ever. But he's never been as consistent a match winner as Sachin or for that matter even lesser mortals.

Judging a batsman purely by match winning hundreds in a team sport is beyond logic. Langer might be regarded as bigger than Sunny......

  8. ok...take count...111 at Jo burg, 114 at Perth, 120 at Edgbaston, 115 at Melbourne, 136 at Chennai, these are centuries when Sachin was the only batsman who was batting..... And no other batsman contributed..... The reason Sachin has never been a match winner in tests is because India havent taken full advantage of his innings....take for example his 155 against SA in 2001. Tendulkar made sure India got off from 50 /4 to 366/6 at the end of the day...Is it Sachin's fault that India was all out for 372 and the bowlers bowled badly?

    ReplyDelete
  9. @ Mahesh

"A match is won by bowlers and set up by batsmen"

I probably think you missed out watching the best ever test innings ever played in the history of the game.. Its certaily the 153* by Lara at Bridgetown Barbados.. Please do watch it and think about the comment you have given...

Also Laxman's 281 (in which Dravid made 180) was a test match won by bats men. There are lots of them.

I agree to the fact that Lara is unfortunatly the player to have had involved in most test defeats, but you should consider that only for first 6 years of Lara's carrer he had the support from his team (which includes good batters and bowlers) and for the rest of his carrer he was certainly the lone pride of WI cricket. Can you point me one bowler from WI, after the greats Ambrose and Walsh retired, who had the potential to rattle any top order in the world, certainly not (Please dont come up with names of Pedro collins, Merv Dillon or any such bowlers for that matter, they were there just to fill places). India never had such an attack in its history. Even Venkatesh Prasad was a better bowler than the new ball bowlers of WI after 1999 and WI have never had the spin power with them ever. Harbajan and Kumble certainly have been in top 5 spinners list ever since 2001, srinath (the best indian FAST bowler) had played along Sachin throughout his carrer. These are certainly some lame reasons pointed out by most of Indians just to defend Sachin.

    @ Ramki

Please dont try to come up with each hundreds of Sachin just to make a point here, even Dravid has 28 hundreds in tests (out of which just one was for losing cause). Its not about how a player takes on a bowler in a test match. Gayle who is known for his attacking approch had played one of his best test innings a week back and it was a solid innings, dravid's innings are more like that. It certainly helps a cause and just not for attraction.

Even i wanted to comment on your tag line below your Heading. One of which says that "How over hyped is Steve Waugh?", certainly a Controversial question, it can be changed to "How over hyped is Sachin Tendulkar?". Sachin is certainly a great, genius....etc. But just in the line with Lara, no doubt in it. Lara never had commentators like "Harsha", "Sunny" and "Ravi" going along with him throughout his carrer to blow up his image where as Sachin certainly had that. Sunny's job till now is just to blow away things related to Sachin out of propotion. Lara never had such people around, probably Lara should have been born in Mumbai to have acheived this height.

    ReplyDelete
  10. @ Kashyap

I would agree with you on the Barbados innings more than the Laxman one. For all the greatness of Laxman's innings, it required a great spell from Bhajji and Sachin to win the match thanks to Sourav's ultra conservative declaration.

In fact I was about to add a * in that statement saying that this statement is true in general and that Lara is one batsman who's capable of reversing that equation in that statement too...
But all said, those are exceptions. Bowlers win matches axiom holds true in most cases...

We don't have a necessity to defend Sachin anyways. Sachin is more than mere statistics and the same applies to Lara too. I pointed about Lara's match winning abilities or the lack of it coz u raised the point about Sachin's. To me Sachin and Lara are by far the best batsmen of this generation and the experience of watching both of them bat is the only proof required.

On ur point of so many people being there to blow up Sachin's image - lets not forget that it could so easily have backfired, it is to Sachin's credit that he ensured that it never happened. Also Australians have been more intent on blowing up his image than Indians and that comes purely from their respect for a champion and not coz of any biases. Why do you allow other people's blowing up his image affect ur evaluation of Sachin.....If I have to act like u in evaluating Lara, I would think of Tony Cozier as the ultimate jalra in the early part of his career (till Cozier himself felt let down). But in contrast I only wished he had more jalras actually!

On the point of "How overhyped is Steve Waugh" - settle that with me and not Ramki. Poor guy he's a huge fan of Steve Waugh...

    ReplyDelete
  11. I do agree Ravi, and Sunny blow up Sachin's image beyond what he is....But wait a minute, what about Benaud, Bill Lawry, Mark Taylor, Michael Holding, and myriad other commentators who do not have to make a living hyping Tendulkar? Do they say anything different? For that matter the same is true with Lara too...take away Tony Cozier, and that doesnt diminish Lara's image.... There were only two batsmen in this era..who got standing ovation in Aus everytime when they went in to bat...one was Lara and the other is Tendulkar...You can accept the first but wouldnt accept the second??

    ReplyDelete
  12. And in this context to overhype Srinath's ability as a fast bowler is a little too much I say....

In fact the way u stress the he was India's best FAST bowler is reason enough for the lack of as many match winning innings as Sachin should have ideally had in his kitty. Ironically he bowled well only after he dropped a bit of pace for about 2 to 3 years at the end of his career. Earlier he was the bowler's version of the young De Silva - the mad max...

    ReplyDelete
  13. And as for Steve Waugh, I have till now maintained that I like Steve Waugh and he is one of the greatest players et al...but I have never degraded anyone to put Steve Waugh in front.... There are better players than him, I do agree...and Mahesh would point out most of centuries came against England, I agree..but for that Aus has just lost the subsequent Ashes with Warne and Mcgrath in England, without Steve Waugh.....England has looked Aus in the eye only after Waugh went out...You have to agree to that!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  14. @Ramki

Dont score cheap points for Steve Waugh here......Let's deal with that in a seperate blog...Like how Ian Chappell dedicated a chapter in"Chappelli speaks out" for Steve Waugh....that was hilarious man.....I so loved it....

    ReplyDelete
  15. Well your comments state that Lara and Sachin have been equal power in our generation and thats what i wanted to say. In fact in tests i would add Dravid and Hayden along side them and place Lara a step above.

Coming on to blowing up things, i never knew that Mr.Tony Cozier was there to blow up the work of Lara. I have watched almost all innings of Lara and never felt this and i just feel its just a patch from your side to defend Sachin again. Also Aussies have always praised Lara in the same way as Sachin and in fact McGrath has said Lara stands above Sachin according to him.

Just to make a point here, Aussie commentators really say more about Sachin just to get a place for themselves in the commentry box since India plays most and Indian crowd is the most across the world. Its just their tactics. I dont want to start a new thread on this and leave it here.

Coming on to Steve Waugh, i certainly dont agree to that and in fact feel he was not hyped as much as he should have been. I showed the results to the world and easily the best captain ever i have watched (i havnt seen Clive Loyd led WI side), accepted the fact that Steve wa most equipped captin but still he managed it well enough and was unbeatable.

    ReplyDelete
  16. To me Sachin is still a notch or two above Lara....

Mcgrath has made a few statements on Lara and Sachin over the years - some saying Sachi is better and one saying Lara is slightly better. Once even going to the extent of saying Sachin, Lara and Steve Waugh are all equal.......lol...

If we have to weigh in Mcgrath's opinion what about Don and Warne? Akram, Donald? for that matter anyone who has played against both...even Richards man...

"Aussie commentators really say more about Sachin just to get a place for themselves in the commentry box since India plays most and Indian crowd is the most across the world. Its just their tactics."

Its a joke man. Their place in the commentary box is a long term contract with Channel 9 which has been their tradition even before Sachin started his career. And most of the channel 9 commentators dont even go outside of Australia (non channel 9 coverage that is) for commentary assignments. Ian Chappell and Tony Greig are notable exceptions - really you wouldn't think Ian Chappell would be praising Sachin for the sake of enhancing opportunities - do u??? And Tony Greig is equally effusive in his praise of both Lara and Sachin...

If you think Tony Cozier was not a Lara jalra, god u cant be more biased....Harsha Bhogle at best is only as much a Sachin jalra as Cozier is of Lara...

Steve Waugh is the greatest captain??? Sorry boss I live in a different planet then...

    ReplyDelete
  17. Hmmm.. If you say that Tony Cozier did to Lara what Harsha is doing for Sachin, then i think you certainly live in a different planet...

Also Sachin is certainly the most over hyped cricketer ever played the game and i am sure the devotees of so called "GOD" will never accept this fact. If he is called as the "GOD" of cricket, i am a atheist for sure. The grace of Lara cannot be matched by any one.

To me Lara is certainly a step ahead of other cricketers in Test matches(which actually shows the real metal of a batsman).

Coming on to Steve, if he is not the greates captainin our era, who do you think is???? Mark Taylor and Hansi can be accepted to a level for comparision, but please dont come up with the names of Ganguly, Dhoni for this.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Mark Taylor (Surely the best... so much so that when I had to pick an all time dream XI, I picked for his captaincy alone...) and Imran Khan (from whatever little that I have seen) in my book are the best that I have seen. Its too early to evaluate Dhoni as a capitan now...I must also make a special mention of the extraordinary share of fortune going his way so far...

Sourav was a good leader of men but in my opinion was woefully short on on-field tactics.

Stephen Fleming showed great promise but its impossible to evaluate his captaincy coz of the poor results of his team. But I would any day think he was better than Steve Waugh.

And my statement on how overhyped is Steve Waugh goes beyond his captaincy. In fact primarily his batting...but lets leave the discussion on the greatness of Steve Waugh as a batsman for another day.....

    ReplyDelete
  19. Well... I was travelling for couple of days and didn't check the blog. I should say Ramki, Hesh and Kashyap have enlightend us with all the stats to prove their point.

Warne rated Sachin as the greatest cricketer ever(remember his book "My Top 100 Test Cricketers"), he infact laboured long and hard over choosing his top 100 Test cricketers. Now Shane is someone who wud be at the top of the list if someone else writes a similar book. If you wanna know why Sachin had to be the greatest, don't dig the stats too much... anyone who plays 20 years of cricket MIGHT have such stats but the very fact that he has been allowed by the PEOPLE of India to represent the cricket crazy nation for 20 yrs speaks of the greatness of the man. The only person who can take his place in the team for granted for so many years, no selector will even think about dropping him from the team. Lara faced such axe couple of times in his carrer, remember Mike Findlay dropped him in 2000. Sachin is surely ahead of everyone. Is this over hyping Sachin's ability??? I'm an atheist, its been years since I went to a temple but I still worship SACHIN AS A GOD.

By no means am against Lara, I still remember during the college days I used to have pix of Lara and Sachin in my Wallet, they are easily the greatest players that I've seen.

I am consentaneous with Hesh on Steve Waugh, he certainly is an over-hyped cricketer and I shall reserve my thoughts on that.

  20. For no apparent reason, I just wanted post a comment by Rohit Brijnath in his blog in Straits times on Federer's no.15 jacket after his wimbledon victory over Roddick:

"As an athletic and aesthetic experience, Federer is probably unmatched. In 23 years of writing, perhaps only Michael Jordan (and India's Sachin Tendulkar) have moved me more. He's also a terrific role model. But I still don't like the jacket. But hey, feel free to disagree. "

One more from Rahu Bhattacharya in Cricinfo:

"Sachin is God" is the popular analogy. Yet god may smile as disease, fire, flood and Sreesanth visit the earth, and expect no fall in stock. For Tendulkar the margin for error is rather less."

Take Sachin out of this statement and replace with any other name u can imagine, it would look so out of sync...

    ReplyDelete
  21. @ Ramesh

Well, when ever we talk something about Sachin, there is always a bunch of people to fly around to come up with new phrases about Sachin, this is a very common sight and unfortunately another Indian batsman of this same era also deserves this same kind of defence, but has never got it!!

So you mean to say that, since Lara was dropped once in 2000 but Sachin has never been dropped, Sachin is a step ahead of Lara?? Very silly. There were lots of other reasons behind that move.

One thing about Lara is that (and very well known fact for all real crickete lovers), when its not his day even David Crookes may look like a McGrath to you, but on his day, well we know what he can do.

About Shane's top 100, i guess you can come up with some more stronger points FOR Sachin, than this rating. Simple thing from this rating, Mr. Andrew Flintoff was at 30 and likes of Sanath Jayasuryia, Ganguly, Inzy and lots of others way behind. According to Warne, Ganguly just manages to come in his 100 at 96 whereas even Tim May could find a place at 53. Who is Warne to come up the list????? And why should we start an arguement with his useless ratings.

I dont say Sachin is not a great player, i just say, he is easily the most over hyped player ever to have lived/played the game. Likes of Lara, Dravid are equally good, just that their approch is different. The way Dravid takes on Warne or McGrath is very much different than Lara or Sachin and many wont like that approch, but if you see as a true cricket fan, Dravid plays no less good innings than Sachin has (in a different manner though).

And for Lara, i feel sad that, he dint have 1 million followers in his country every time he played or had the luxury of commentators who blew trumpets all the way he went. If he had had these, probably the below statement could easily be replaced with his name.

"Sachin is God" is the popular analogy. Yet god may smile as disease, fire, flood and Sreesanth visit the earth, and expect no fall in stock. For Tendulkar the margin for error is rather less. Take Sachin out of this statement and replace with any other name u can imagine, it would look so out of sync..."

  22. With a guy as volatile as Lara, a billion supporters’ expectations would have probably broken him down. This kind of insane following is almost always a double edged sword. It’s a tribute to Sachin's talent and personality that his stocks have never really declined.

This kind of imbalance in perspective will always be there. If Andy Flower had played for England, they would have hailed him as on par with any of the contemporary greats – but coz he played for Zimbabwe he was just a stand out player in a bad team and nothing more. What about the ne kid on the block – Shakib ul Hasan – had he been playing for India, England or Australia, he would have been hailed as the next big thing in the game by now. Why do you allow the way others treat a player affect your evaluation of a player.

Think of it from my perspective. I think Sachin is the most analysed, dissected cricker ever…He plays in the air, it’s a problem, he hits all along the ground it’s a problem. I even know people who had some nasty things to say about Sachin for our loss to Australia in Hyderabad in the recent ODI series – really no other player has had to endure this kind of criticism.

Brabados Lara Special is arguably (surely the best in my cricket watching career) the greatest innings eve played in the game. But lets leave the magnitude of the greatness of that innings aside for a while.

Sachin’s 136 agt Pak in Chepauk is a masterpiece in its own right. The first five wickets falling for next to nothing, chasing a challenging target against Wasim and Saqlain at the peak of their powers, he did all that is humanly possible and some more and makes one mistake and he’s yet to get that monkey off his back at least as far some critics like you are concerned. Lara had a similar moment in that Barbados innings and Healy dropped that chance – that was that….

No one is subjected to such intense pressure and monumental expectations. I think it was Rohit Brijnath again who said this abt Sachin sometime back “Outside of black athletes during Nazi days, no sportsman has had to endure as much expectations and pressure as Sachin”. And under that kind of pressure, for him to have played the way he has done and so consistently over the years alone is reason enough to rate him above the rest even the rest contains one certain Brian Charles Lara….

but let me also add thats not the only reason!

    ReplyDelete
  23. and I completely agree with you on Shane Warne's list...it was more to settle personal scores...as much as I hate Steve Waugh, even I cant think Lehman is better than him!!! It was a farce...

  24. everyones been talking stats...but what about the sheer pleasure derived out of watching each of them play..when lara bats his whole body is in such perfect harmony..he is so fluid when he caresses the ball in his esquisite square drives/cover drives/square cuts and every other shot in his repertoire..his pulls with his right foot off the ground...his follow through after his dance-down-the-wicket-sixers...so mellifluous...when he bats he makes it look so easy....for the visual delight lara 1 sachin 0...people say david gower is one of the most stylish batsmen to have played the game..southpaw advantage i guess...

    ReplyDelete
  25. @ Arun

I agree with every point you said about Lara, but for the score card at the end which says Lara 1 and Sachin 0.... When you see Lara play, you get the feeling that these shots can be played only by him and not anybody else, but Sachin evokes a different kind of reaction. It makes you feel that even you can play that shot but only when have the bat in hand and try, that you understand the difficulty in making things look so simple. And, tell me one shot that is Lara plays so exquisitely that Sachin doesnt? If southpaws have the advantage of looking stylish, what about Laxman, Mark Waugh, Aravinda De Silva, Dravid, Damien Martyn, Azharuddin, Gavaskar, Vishwanath?

If all that we are talking is stats, then for you watching a batsman in the nets should be no different from watching him in the match!

Perfect harmony, balance, aesthetics....Lara 1 and Sachin 0. LMAO.......Dictionary meaning of Balance falls shorter in explaining the word completely as much a mere Sachin stance at the crease...Lara is a delight to watch for sure, but please.... Before anyone could take him seriously let me also add that he believes Ramprakash is one of the most graceful batsmen......

You cant blindly say that Lara would have broken down with a billion follwers. Its easy to write these stuff, just to show Sachin a step above Lara, you cant imagine blindly.

Talking about the Hyd innings, leave aside what some critics say about this innings, it was indeed a great innings and many have played such knocks. Even Dilshan's innings today was as equal as that, the pressure, the target and kind of pitch he played today, all were as same as that of waht we saw in Hyd, but how many of us will talk about Dilshan?? Since he is just Dilshan, we leave this innings behind and rate Sachin's a step above.

Even one of Inzy's 143 against us ended up on a losing cause, but still how many of us remember that?? The way he took apart our bowlers was just terrific, but no one talks about that. Many such innings are there in history like this gone unnoticed. Even Ganguly's 124 against Pak in 1998 Independence cup, chasing 314 (which we won) was not talked so much as this. The fact is that Hyd was such a flat track and when Dilshan can do it in such a flat track at Rajkot, why not Sachin???? Why this hype only to Sachin????

There are lots who have written articles about each and every innings Sachin plays and thats why i mentioned earlier that each time they come with new phrases. The hype created has gone to such an extent now. Dravid equally deserves all these credits and its all because of his approch that people refrain from writing about him.

About drop catches, common it just happens in cricket and its all about how that player makes use of it. Even i can tell you that, Lara was dropped on 0 by Kallis in World Cup first match and went on to score a match winning hundred. Sachin was dropped by Razzak on his way to "Famous" 98 in world cup.

One big example of how these trumpets carry on their job behind Sachin... On of Sachin's six in his 98 against Pak in that World cup encounter was awarded the best six of that year (and such an award existed only for that year though). Dont you really think this was too much???? Havnt any other batsman hit a better six in cricket history???? Gavaskar was the one who gave away that award. It was just ridiculous.

  30. I said he would have probably broken down not certainly - its a hypothesis, there's no way to test it. You can disagree...

Inzy's 143 was a great knock by any standards - let both of us sit together and write 10 blogs on that innings. Just coz someone else didnt get what Sachin got, why do you have to undermine Sachin for that?

Hyd innings is equal to Dilshan's????? Oopsy.....I dont want say anything more on that...We are on opposite poles here...

Has Dravid got what he deserves - certainly no...But Sachin didn't do anything for that...

About that dropped catch - the point was to stress that if Lara had been caught by Healy
then, he wouldn't have received as much brickbats as Sachin did for the Chepauk innings - in fact I dont think the innings would have lost much of its significance even if he had been caught. But for Sachin the yardstick is something else...

How do all these examples of Sachin hype affect what Sachin is? If you create a billion people doing the same for Lara and Dravid - I would be more than happy to join in chorus...and more importantly my evaluation of them wouldn't change a bit because of that.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I just dont want to create a billion people for that. Those who have watched the game and have seen these players play, would surly know that Sachin is no great than what Lara was. My evaluation also would never change a bit because of all these points about this most hyped cricketer.

And by no means i undermine Sachin, i too always accept the fact that he is a genius, i just say Lara is as equal as Sachin is and also Sachin is way too much overhyped for what he is.

BTW I dint see your comments about the award for that six????

  32. lol...thats all that I can say about that award for the six...

  33. Rama...i never said ramprakash is one of the most graceful at all...hesh is guilty of misqouting me...Harsha`..u being the only witness..pls testify...i only said he was a stylish batsman..like thorpe..like sanga..jayawardene..hashim amla..greg blewett et al..and i cldnt agree more with the list that you mentioned..I know Ramprakash does not have a cicketing record to envy..not on the international scene for sure (he might still have a first class record to die for)...but my comment was not on ability..just that as long as he was batting (often not very long) he was good to watch....

and hesh..u keep talking every other day that some Murali Vijay got a 150 odd..rohit got a 300 odd in Ranji and the like..i know that you know that ramprakash's got over a 100 first class centuries to his credit..(u might however hold the domestic cricket scene in england in low regard ...but mate 100 100's...in first class he is second only to the legendary Jack Hobbs) ..my only point is he is not as bad as you make him out to be...

and one humble request...DO NOT MISQOUTE...

    ReplyDelete
  34. **** that was a misquote....This was written on Dec 14 even before our discussions with Harsha. So surely Harsha can't be a judge here. I surely remember u telling this. dont chicken out now...

Anyways to even admire Ramprakash for whatever reasons is a crime. Dude to talk about Vijay and Rohit playing well in domestic cricket is different from talking about an Atul Bedade or a Amay Khurasiya (to name just 2) doing well in domestic cricket. Rohit in my opinion is the next big thing in Indian Cricket along with Ishant Sharma...So obviously I am excited by his good performances...

BTW let me also add a couple of names that u called stylish the other day which Harsha can surely vouch for - Nasser Hussain and Marvan Atapattu (that square cut off his where his bat does a 360* helicopter swing as follow through is ridiculously funny)...

    ReplyDelete
  35. i stand by both the names...bottomline..style is subjective..what i perceive as style might be different from what u perceive. and dont even try to say ur perception is better...so let that be..

"Anyways to even admire Ramprakash for whatever reasons is a crime"...is a ridiculous hyperbole..heights of exaggeration...Rama/kashyap/ramesh... u guys want to comment on this insanity..

    ReplyDelete
  36. why do you wanna pull in support. You have clarified that you stand by what u said - let people judge the way they want it to. And moreover by calling others to react u might be asking for trouble...

  37. I hope SriLankan press does not read this about considering Mark Ramprakash in the same regard as Sanga, Jayawardane lest there might be couple of suicides in their squad (Blame the LTTE for this agenda ;-)). And to base that on profiles written by English sports journalists or County cricket achievements is no less blasphemous. I believe Mark Ramprakash might have a heart stroke of sheer joy.

I have nothing against your perception Mouli, each has his own. My cousin in forth standard thinks Joginder Sharma should be chosen ahead of Ishant Sharma cos he won a T20 final for us. Well, each has his own opinion, right? Btw, he also thinks Ishant and Joginder are related cos of "Sharma". But, Mark Ramprakash?!! I would have rather been pleased to hear Ian Bell! No matter how scratchy and ungainly he can be on international scene, he is the next big run machine in county and age is on his side. At 28 he could perhaps be the youngest in his county side with few of his team mates in late thirties vying for English side as youngsters (Pls bear with my angst against English selection policy, which seemed true not quite long ago). Btw, my votes for Gagan Khoda who has a very impressive record at the domestic scene. But, Mark Ramprakash??!!

But, I guess we have to give it to Mouli that it is his perception, however outrageous it might seem to us. Kanwaljit Singh's cousin once told me in a get together that Kumble and others conspired against him. Well, perception you see.

  41. Arun.....After all Sri Harsha has said, i doubt whether I need to add anything but I just want to say one thing since this all started with you answering me.....As Harsha said, each has his own likes and dislikes, but having read what you wrote about Lara so wonderfully, how can you say or write Mark Ramprakash is graceful in the same day?

For all his domination, and his wonderful play I wouldnt say Sachin is graceful(I think Hesh would agree with me)....beautiful, wonderful, magnificent, fantastic, any other adjective....but not graceful. Thats not a quality which can be practised, its something you are born with....I have nothing against Ramprakash, as you said to score 100 centuries is no mean feat, and this guy scored a century against the mighty Windies at Bridgetown which was WI's fortress...but scoring 100 centuries shows the guy's mental toughness, not his grace.

And seriously...man...Atapattu? You have atleast come to the right country SriLanka...which has its share of graceful players, so it would only be a matter of time before you zero in on the right person!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Just to clarify on Ramki's point on Sachin's grace. When I see Sachin bat, perfect is the word that comes to mind more than grace. I think with a lot of players grace seems to be a substitute for something missing. With Sachin there is a completeness which I cant see in any other cricketer - maybe Michael Holding's action...If I have to take another sport for comparison - its like a Pete Sampras serve (admittedly I am not the greatest fan of Sampras, infact far from it, but how can I not admire his serve)- its just perfect, any other description can come later.

As usual I resort to Sambit Bal for giving better words to my thoughts. Here is his introduction of Sachin in Cricinfo:

"Sachin Tendulkar has been the most complete batsman of his time, and arguably the biggest cricket icon as well. His batting is based on the purest principles: perfect balance, economy of movement, precision in stroke-making, and that intangible quality given only to geniuses, anticipation. If he doesn't have a signature stroke - the upright, back-foot punch comes close - it is because he is equally proficient in each of the full range of orthodox shots (and plenty of improvised ones as well) and can pull them out at will"

Its that completeness which makes his batting so compelling and so irresistible...

  43. The truth is that Ramprakash is unmatched at county level but an under-performer in Tests. Hundred 100's at county level and averaging only 27 at the international level spks for itself. Cricket is definitely played between the ears. This guy is a perfect example not withstanding the compelling pressure of International cricket which Sachin has so beautifully handled for umpteen number of yrs.

As for grace is concerned Lara certainly tops the list, Ramprakash is good in pieces, Sachin as rightly pointed out is a perfectionist, A COMPLETE BATSMAN and so do Dravid, jus that the attacking instincts of Dravid is a little below par wrt to Sachin and Lara.

  44. No england player (in last two decades) is worth discussing in any forum/blog. So there is no point discussing about this Ramprakash.

On his 100 100's, one of my friend who plays cricket at beach/MRC nagar scores 50+ every time he bats.. probably he wld have scored around 150+ 50's in last 6 years... does that mean he is really worth discussing in our forum??? NEVER. Same holds good with all english county players.

Its marina, MRC nagar, trustpuram and so on for us at Chennai, and its county cricket for them at england.
