A glimpse of the future.....

There used to be a time in Indian cricket, when the openers would get out cheaply, Sachin would come in and play an absolute blinder and India would go on to lose the Test match. The last time this happened was in Kingston 2001, and after that if somebody had said to me the next time this would happen is in 2010, I would have laughed myself to death. But, yes this is a sign of India's growth as a Test team and forget what happened today at Nagpur, we can still claim a right to the number 1 spot(come on guys , Dhoni eventually will have to lose one someday). But on the brighter side, Indian cricket and public would have known the true value of Rahul Dravid, and had he been there he would have only got out after tea to Steyn(i wouldnt blame Indian batting, the spell if it had been painted would be hanging in Louvre now!) and that would have been crucial in the long run. I am not even angry that India lost inside 4 days. What made me angry was an article in Cricinfo referring about India's so called bleak future!

http://www.cricinfo.com/indvrsa2010/content/story/447467.html

Bleak future? The so called explanation given was that, in the absence of Dravid and Laxman, and also the see saw form of Yuvi, Indian batting future looks very bleak in the presence of a quality bowling line up.

I could agree with only one fact in the above statement, about SA's bowling, but since when did the future become so bleak for India? And, add to that based on this Test's batting line up?

Poor Saha...For no fault of his, he was dropped from the frying pan into the fire to face the fury. But to his credit, he did bat decently in the second innings for a man playing his first test. Vijay, had his first twin failures in a test match, and that too in his 4th test match to be precise, and Badrinath played a responsible innings which showed more of his temperament than class, and for a debutant showing temperament is very good indeed! Now put your hand on your heart and say that if you are thinking of India's future batting line up, the top 6, will these 3 feature in that?

Surely Vijay, may be Badrinath, but Saha? Ok, let us just say for argument sake that these three would make the future Indian batting line up, the author goes on to say the steadiness of Dravid, the classiness of Laxman would be missed and cannot be replaced. That is true, inspite of whatever we have in future. Just because, we are going to miss something good doesnt mean that whatever we have is bad? And to prove the point, the author goes on to say that when India won after following on Laxman and Dravid were its prinicipal architects!

Agreed- but that was in 2001, while Laxman made his debut in '97 and Dravid in '96. It took them 5 years to come up with a masterpiece like that. To take matters into perspective, India's fab 4 as it was called before Sehwag came into the picture cut a sorry figure when it failed to chase 120 at Barbados against the WI, with only Sachin and Azhar being the experienced guys in a young batting line up consisting of Ganguly, Laxman and Dravid! And I dont have to mention, Bangalore, Karachi, Cape Town, Mumbai etc..( the list is long if we start talking about Indian batting collapses)

We are in the process of making the same mistake the Windies did, trying to replace a legend with another player and expecting him to match the legend's feats.

There cannot be another Dravid, but surely we have enough strength in Pandey, Pujara, Vijay, Raina, Badri, Mukund, Karthik, and may be a long shot..Kaif to fill in the No.3 slot which is not difficult. The guy need not(cannot) bat like Dravid, but if he bats like a proper No.3 thats more than what we ask from him!

If anything is bleak, its our bowling-who after Zaheer, and who is that turbaned guy who looks like Bhajji? Somebody ask Ishant to start bowling like he did in Nagpur 2008? He is increasingly starting to bowl balls that I bowl and thats scaring me.

  1. Spot on Ramki, I agree with in this and the article in cricinfo about Inian future in Tests was real rubbish.

To an extent if you see, the No.1 spot came to India largly because of Sehwag and Gambhir, infact more because of Sehwag than anyone else. When we had fab 4 in our team, the fab 4 performed well in parts barring Dravid, who was consistent of the four. I really dont understand the concept of this Fab 4 which includes Ganguly and Laxman, two very ordinary test players. Ganguly was really a very ordinary test player and Laxman was good at times. If India calls this as Fab 4, then probably the then Australia had Fab 7 and South Africa a Fab 5. Only Sachin and Dravid deserve to be in Fab list.

The main problem was that, they never tried out any other player during those times and we tought India had only this set of players as their best, who knows, if Badri had made his debut 5 or 6 yrs back, he would have had better record than Laxman or Ganguly. Now they say, he is too old.

The best part about Badri is his recent statement to selectors to atleast give him a chance to be dropped from the squad, such has been his state.

Raina, Karthik, Rohit, Vijay, Kholi, Pujara and Badri are certainly good players and are capable of reaching heights if used properly and not just have in the team. I really feel sorry for Karthik for he was never given a permanent slot in the side and was hanging around in each game and finally dropped.

Gambhir is the best example for these youngsters. When Gambhir made his debut, he was not so good player for a year and finally now we can see what he is capable of. Its time that has made us realise the potential of this player. Nowadays each and every player making his debut has just 2 innings to prove his caliber at the highest level and when he does not score in his first two tests they start talking about Laxman's 281 against Aus and the Fab 4.

To me, the Fab 4 has never been successful for India and really two of them never even deserve to be called so. Its clearly because of these next gen players like Sehwag, Gambhir, Dhoni that we have tasted the success and hope these youngsters are given proper chance and in proper ways to prove themselves.

Raina, Rohit, Karthik and a lot are capable of acheiving greater heights than Ganguly and Laxman.

  2. Gambhir is not the only example for players who started ordinary but went on to become much better. Sehwag looked all at sea agt Shoaib Akhtar & co in his debut series. But a couple of yrs later he was a completely different player. And now he's the only Indian batsman since Dravid who can stake claim to be an all time great. What stake claim - he is already one.

Badri, Vijay, Rohit, Manish and Pujara are more than adequate replacements for Laxman & Sourav and probably deserve a place ahead of Yuvraj too in the test squad.

The irony of that article in Cricinfo is that a couple of days before, the same N Hunter had written a really nice piece on Badri's nerves on the eve of the test and follows up with this
    one!

  3. Also Harbajan needs to be dropped from the side atleast for some time. He is the only player who has taken his place for granted without real performance for a long time now. Its high time Harbajan is dropped and not just rested. Irrespective of his performance, Harbajan is the only Indian bowler to have his place for granted, even Z Khan was dropped for his poor performance.

  4. I think this is our most harmonious post yet! all 3 of us are in complete agreement.

Bhajji shud become a T-20 specialist and quit other forms of the game. I don't think he can even spell penetration these days :-) Ojha is a better option any day over him.

The blogger's curse is gonna come back and haunt us. What if the Calcutta wicket turns out to be a rank turner (despite the early denial by the curator) ad Bhajji bowls India to victory. As unlikely as that is, I really don't mind that curse!

  5. Even if he takes a "5 for" or more, its high time he goes out and let Mishra, Ojha and Chawla play in. He is more like Ganguly, Laxman who really had their places sealed even when they were not so good.

SA are probably most vulnerable to spin and they had no problems facing Harbajan in Indian soil. Only Mishra troubled them a bit (only a bit though!). Atleast we can chk our bench strength of spinners and give a try to some new ones.

One main problem has been the hype these players get through media and the commentators. I have seen Gavaskar praising Harbajan many a times for no reason and few actions that bhajji does are purly to get the attention, like hugging Sreeshanth, and people just start talking about his team spirit. Its pure drama that he does every time he enters the field and i dont feel anything wrong in what Hayden said on him :)

  6. I made a blunder in not speaking about Rohit in the blog, but i can justify by saying Rohit isnt the replacement for Dravid or Laxman but Sachin!!!

  7. Exactly. The no.4 slot is his to inherit.

  8. Give it a thought !! Is there a better time for cricinfo to come up with an article like how many are suddenly talking about Karthik's batting skills.. Suddenly he must be feeling like a specialist batsman :-)
